Jiu-Jitsu’s Missing Moral Compass

By Mark Fusco

There’s a hard truth the martial arts world doesn’t want to face: skill without character is dangerous.

When most people think about morality in martial arts, they think about controlling physical violence—knowing when not to strike, when not to choke, when to show restraint. But that’s not where the real problem is.

The real issue is what happens when instructors abuse the trust placed in them.

Right now, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is facing that reality head-on.

We are seeing situations where instructors manipulate students…
Where senior belts exploit junior ones…
Where authority is used not to build others up but to take advantage of them through grooming.

And in some cases, this has grooming behavior involving young athletes.

Let’s be clear—this isn’t about adults making poor relationship decisions. This is about patterns of manipulation, imbalance of power, and environments that allow it to happen.

The Real Problem Isn’t Rules—It’s the Absence of Foundation

I’ve spent over 50 years in the martial arts. I’ve trained in traditional systems like Jujitsu and Karate—where codes of conduct weren’t just words on a wall… they were lived expectations.

But in many BJJ academies I’ve trained in were missing something.

There was skill. There was toughness. There was camaraderie. But there was no true moral anchor.

Without that anchor, environments can drift.

Bravado replaces humility. Ego replaces responsibility. And eventually… lines get crossed.

We’ve seen this before. Karate went through similar growing pains when it expanded. The difference is those systems had a framework to fall back on.

BJJ, in many cases, does not.

And what we’re seeing now—high-profile scandals, broken trust, damaged lives—is the result.

Codes Aren’t Enough

Here’s the uncomfortable reality. You can write a code. You can hang it on the wall. You can even recite it before class. But a code doesn’t change the heart.

People don’t live right because they memorized rules. They live right because something deeper is driving them.

This isn’t just a behavioral issue.

It’s a spiritual problem.

The Only Solution That Holds Under Pressure

After decades of training, teaching, and living through my own failures, I’ve come to one clear conclusion. True moral strength doesn’t come from discipline alone. It comes from alignment with God.

For me, that transformation came through Jesus Christ. When I recommitted my life to Him, everything changed.

I didn’t do the right thing because I was supposed to. I did it because I understood what had been done for me. Jesus didn’t give me a list of rules. He gave me a reason.

A reason rooted in sacrifice.
A reason grounded in love.
A reason that holds—even when I’m tired, frustrated, or under pressure.

That’s the difference.

Because when pressure hits—and it always does—you don’t rise to your rules…You fall to your foundation.

Why I Wrote Lion’s Way

Over time, I started seeing something powerful. The same lessons that shaped me on the mat were the same lessons God was using to shape my life. So I began connecting them.

Real training experiences.
Real failures.
Real moments under pressure.

Matched with Biblical truth.

That process became my book:
Lion’s Way: The Christian Walk of a Master Martial Artist.

This isn’t theory.

It’s a practical pathnshowing how to take what you already understand as a martial artist and apply it to your faith… so that your character holds when it matters most.

The Call

The martial arts world doesn’t need more techniques. It needs stronger men and women.

People who lead with integrity.
Who protect instead of exploit.
Who build others up instead of using them.

That kind of strength doesn’t come from training harder. It comes from being grounded in something greater than yourself.

God has already equipped you with what you need. The question is—are you connected to it?

Step Onto the Right Path

If you’re serious about becoming not just a better martial artist but a better man or woman…

If you want a faith that holds when life hits hard…

Then Lion’s Way was written for you.

It will help you take what you know from the mat…
and transform how you live off it.

Because the goal isn’t just to win rounds.

It’s to walk in a way that honors God and impacts everyone around you.
